Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. This verse has been a comfort to me in so many ways. My thoughts today were directed specifically to the part where it says to not lean on our own understanding. What a challenge! Our own understanding is part of our everyday experiences.
The book of Job has become one of my favorites lately because it is so full of human responses to tragic situations. Job and his friends only focused on what their own understanding was at the time. Job’s true heart was revealed when He spoke back to God and said, “I know that You can do everything. And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld in You. You asked, “Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?” Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand. Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Listen, please, and let me speak: You said, “I will question you, and you shall answer me.” I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:2-6. Job was repenting for leaning on his own understanding.
This book is not about the restoration of things but about the relationship between Job and God. God trusted Job and now Job learned what it means to trust in God. Job is our example of what trusting in God really means and not leaning on our own understanding. In all of our ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct our path.
